چکیده

Theoretical models of unsupervised category learning postulate that humans “invent” categories to accommodate new patterns, but tend to group stimuli into a small number of categories. This “Ockham’s razor” principle is motivated by normative rules of statistical inference. If categories influence perception, then one should find effects of category invention on simple perceptual judgments. In two experiments, we tested this prediction by asking participants to estimate the number of colored circles on a computer screen, with the the number of circles drawn from a color-specific distribution. When the distributions associated with each color overlapped, paricipants’ estimates were biased towards values intermediate between the two means, indicating that they grouped the stimuli into a single category. These data suggest that humans favor simpler explanations of sensory inputs. In contrast, when the distributions associated with each color overlapped minimally, the bias was reduced, indicating that sensory evidence for more complex explanations can override the simplicity bias.

Perceptual estimation obeys Occam's razor

A Syntactic Approach to Prediction

A central question in the empirical sciences is; given a body of data how do we best attempt to make predictions? There are subtle differences between current approaches which include Minimum Message Length (MML) and Solomonoff’s theory of induction [24]. The nature of hypothesis spaces is explored and we observe a correlation between the complexity of a function and the frequency with which it...

Systematic misperceptions of 3-D motion explained by Bayesian inference

People make surprising but reliable perceptual errors. Here, we provide a unified explanation for systematic errors in the perception of three-dimensional (3-D) motion. To do so, we characterized the binocular retinal motion signals produced by objects moving through arbitrary locations in 3-D. Next, we developed a Bayesian model, treating 3-D motion perception as optimal inference given sensor...

Psychological challenges for the analysis of style

Analyses of styles in design have paid little attention to how people see style, and how designers use perceptions of style to guide designing. While formal and computational methods for analysing styles and generating designs provide impressively parsimonious accounts of what some styles are, they do not address many of the factors that influence how humans understand styles. The subtlety of h...

Interpreting Asymmetries in Speech Perception with Bayesian Inference

This paper proposes a Bayesian account of asymmetries found in speech perception: In many languages, listeners show greater sensitivity if a non-coronal sound (/b/, /p/, /g/, /k/) is changed to coronal sounds (/d/, /t/) than vice versa. The currently predominant explanation for these asymmetries is that they reflect innate constraints from Universal Grammar. Alternatively, we propose that the a...
